How zakat is calculated

  1. Add the wealth that is subject to zakat: cash and savings, gold and silver, investments held for trading, business stock and money owed to you that you expect to receive.
  2. Subtract debts and bills that are due now.
  3. If the result is at or above the nisab and you have held it for one lunar year (hawl), zakat is 2.5% (one-fortieth) of it.

Nisab: gold or silver?

The nisab is the minimum wealth on which zakat is due: the value of 85 grams of gold or 595 grams of silver. Because silver is far cheaper, the silver nisab is much lower and means more people pay zakat, which benefits the poor; many scholars recommend it for cash savings, while others use gold. Choose the basis recommended by your local scholars.

What is not subject to zakat

Your home, car, furniture, clothes and other personal-use items are exempt. Jewelry worn regularly is a matter of scholarly difference.

Zakat al-Fitr is different

Zakat al-Fitr is a small fixed charity paid for each member of the household before the Eid al-Fitr prayer; it is not calculated as 2.5% of wealth.

This calculator gives an estimate for common cases. For complex situations — such as business partnerships, pensions or long-term investments — consult a qualified scholar.
